APRICITY

-- Indoor Sports Hall --

4 LANDMARKS • 1 SPORTS HALL

Apricity is an indoor sports hall located in North Eveleigh. It is designed to create a vibrant space where sound flows freely, infusing the quiet neighbourhood with a lively, cheerful atmosphere. Engaging both the local community and nearby landmarks, Apricity brings a dynamic energy that enhances the area's spirit without compromising its peaceful character.

THE MASSING

form explorations

" When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free."

The Peace of Wild Things

-- Wendell Berry

Site Analysis

Through sound mapping, the site analysis reveals the quiet rhythms of the area — a stillness shaped by its residential fabric and softened by distance. Noise exists all around, but it is kept at bay; deflected by the urban edges, absorbed by vegetation, dispersed before it reaches the heart of the site. What remains is a pocket of calm, not accidental, but preserved by thoughtful design.

To introduce a sports hall here, especially one centred on the vibrant rhythm of indoor basketball, risks unsettling that delicate peace. But Apricity does not come to disturb. It comes to listen, and to tune itself to the harmony that already exists.

Rather than casting a wide net, Apricity speaks softly, inviting visitors who come not to overwhelm, but to engage with care. It becomes a destination shaped by intention, open to all, but connected through proximity and purpose. Anchored by four key landmarks — South Eveleigh, Redfern Station, Carriageworks, and the University of Sydney — Apricity welcomes a community of movement and stillness alike, where sound is shared, not imposed.
